Abstract

DlJ. ring the last stage of puberty, the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis acquires the ability to respond to high levels of estradiol; this results in a sharp increase in the pituitary output of luteinizing hormone (LH). It is believed that within a mature follicle, the LH surge triggers a complex set of events that results in two apparently independent phenomena: ovulation and luteinization.
